MUSIC
Aryo is a musician in constant exploration, weaving ancestral traditions into bold new musical languages. He is an Indonesian Australian performer, composer, ensemble leader and educator whose work bridges contemporary music with the rich artistic traditions of Indonesia.
Adept on brass and vocals, he has performed with renowned artists including Hunters & Collectors, Go-Jo (Eurovision), Leila Forouhar, Seduceaphones, Son Quba and Opa! Bato. His work has taken him on international tours to Serbia (2019) and Cuba (2023), and to festival stages across Australia, including Woodford Folk Festival, the National Folk Festival, Castlemaine State Festival, Falls Festival, White Night, MOOMBA, Castlemaine Jazz Festival and Eltham Jazz Festival.
His artistic practice has been shaped through international residencies and grants including the Australian Art Orchestra’s Creative Music Intensive (Indonesia), The Advancement of Culture Arts Residency (Indonesia), The Curiosibot (Spain), Punctum Inc and Multicultural Arts Victoria. As a composer, Aryo has created original music for film in collaboration with award-winning animator and multidisciplinary artist Shirin Shakhesi, with works screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival, Melbourne International Animation Festival and Melbourne Women in Film Festival.
Aryo holds a Master of Teaching from the University of Melbourne, a Bachelor of Music from Monash University, and a Diploma of Traditional Music from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI Yogyakarta). Aryo creates music at the threshold of the ancestral and the experimental, where inherited traditions become vehicles for discovery.
